Crowns Q & A
When might I need a dental crown?
A dental crown rehabilitates a damaged tooth by covering it with a strong, porcelain cap. In addition to restoring full function to teeth, crowns can also be used to cover cosmetic problems like stained teeth and gaps between teeth.
You may need a dental crown to:
- Repair a tooth with significant decay
- Strengthen and preserve broken or cracked teeth
- Restore a tooth’s natural shape
- Protect a tooth after a root canal
Crowns are also attached to dental implants to replace missing teeth.
What are CEREC crowns?
CEREC stands for chairside economical restoration of esthetic ceramics, which is a long way of saying you can get your crown in one office visit. By comparison, standard dental crowns require two office visits, and you’ll wear a temporary crown while you wait weeks for a dental lab to produce the crown.
Same-day CEREC crowns are possible thanks to today’s advanced technology and computer-aided manufacturing that allows your dentist at Smiles in Springfield to immediately produce a customized crown in the office.
How are CEREC crowns produced in the dental office?
For the first step, your dentist at Smiles in Springfield prepares the tooth by removing decay (if needed) and slightly reshaping the tooth to accommodate the crown. Your dentist uses a digital 3D camera to create a map of your mouth and a detailed image of the tooth that needs the crown.
Specialized computer software uses the digital image to design the crown, then transmits that information to the on-site fabrication machine. The machine mills your crown from a block of solid ceramic, your dentist cements the CEREC crown to your tooth, and you’re good to go.
What benefits do I gain from a porcelain CEREC crown?
Beyond getting a same-day crown, one of the great benefits of a CEREC crown is that it’s made from porcelain. No other material beats porcelain for producing crowns that have the same quality and appearance as natural tooth enamel. Porcelain is also strong and resists staining.
The porcelain is perfectly tinted to match your existing teeth, so no one will see a difference between your crown and the rest of your teeth.
If you have damaged teeth, need a crown, and you want the convenience of getting all your work done in one office visit, call Smiles in Springfield or schedule an appointment online.
